10th MAYOR OF CAPE TOWN
The Mayor is the head of local government in Cape Town, and is elected by Council every five years. The main role of the Mayor is to identify the needs of the residents of the municipality and recommend ways to realise those needs within the City's budget and in terms of the Integrated Development Plan. The Mayor also monitors the administration, reviews the performance of the municipality and oversees service delivery
He served as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Public Service, as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and the Shadow Minister of Trade and Industry, He is now as the 10th Mayor of Cape Town. He gave voice to key areas such as releasing public land for housing, taking over the rail network, and releasing the city from Eskom's shackles.
Also announced increased allocation for free basic services.
An announcement that the first major commitment of this administration is to increase our allocation to free basic services by over R600 million in the next financial year."
He said it constituted a 20% increase in the City's investment in free basic services, which vulnerable residents rely on the most.
The injection will increase the amount the City spends on free basic services from R3.1 billion to R3.7 billion.
