The GrillFather SA - Mitchell's Plain
Mitchell’s Plain first grill house that has all the flavours of a braai at home without the effort of starting a fire.
The Grillfather, in Westridge shopping centre, opened it’s doors in September, but even before then the owner and self-taught master griller Shane Swiegelaar had already made a name for himself in the area.
Shane started this business in his garage. He'd sell food on a weekend, and Friday’s was being his busiest day. “Then a neighbour complained about all the traffic in the road and started looking for space for his business.
Seeing an opportunity to expand, he found a bigger space on business premises in Mitchell’s Plain and opened his first restaurant, The Grillfather.
In just 4 years, the astute businessman went from operating his business in a garage to owning two restaurants in Mitchell’s Plain and Woodstock; and another on its way in Kuils River.
The name of the business is born out of Shane’s love for the Godfather trilogy, and that coupled with his love for good food is a match made in foodie heaven.
One of the Grillfather’s main selling points is that the menu is small and the most expensive plate of food is the Don Corleone Steak, a 200g steak served with coleslaw and chips.
The steak, which is made to order, is smothered in home-made sauce, which is really the star of all the dishes.
The restaurant orders 80% of his meat and ingredients from Mitchell's Plain suppliers because he has “a great relationship with a local butcher in Mitchell's Plain”.
It was the love for his food that is evident in the foot traffic through the grill-house on weekday afternoons when most takeaways in the area rely on weekend trade.
Sadly, in 2019 It was announced that Shane Swiegelaar had passed on, but his legacy still lives on with every meal the team serves to its loyal customers.
The Grillfather Mitchell's Plain is open Tuesday to Thursday from 11am to 9pm,
Friday & Saturday from 11am to 9pm
Sundays 11am to 5pm.
The Grillfather Woodstock is open Tuesday to Thursday 12pm to 9pm,
Friday & Saturday 12pm to 11pm
Sunday 12pm to 6pm.
They also do call-and-collect orders.

El-Rome was established in 2017 by 2 life time friends who had ventured into various successful business avenues together over the years. Their kids’ love for pizza gave birth to the idea of turning a home-made pizza making passion into a business.
Our pizzas are definitely made in the authentic Italian style of wood fire, just adds the "original" into pizza, the ingredients follow the Italian method of toppings, you can "see" the toppings, the taste, well - you close your eyes and you in Italy.
Strandfontein in particular has been starved of good quality food at an affordable rate for far too long.
The vision of El-Rome was to stand out above the competition, to bring real pizza to the people of Strandfontein and the surrounding areas, at a reasonable cost, although we refuse to spare expense on quality ingredients, ensuring you get the taste you paid for.
We have thus far achieved what we have set out to do and still in process of expanding our horizons to introduce more flavours to our menu and more variety as well. Our Patrons bear testimony to this, most of whom have become regular supporters of El-Rome.
Our pizzeria is always tidy and clean, we have high standards in cleanliness and maintain this, with constant improvement. We pride ourselves by complying fully to the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Our pursuit for perfection if never ending and we promise to always deliver our very best and to succeed our customers’ expectations.

SUSHI FUNDI - MITCHELLS PLAIN
Capetonians love sushi and getting it on the go makes it that much more convenient. Sushi Fundi offers unique dishes from a food truck found near Westgate in Mitchell’s Plain. Founder Maruwaan Christians shows us his specialIties. His sushi platters are things of beauty, each with their own intricate patterns of salmon, prawn, tuna, cucumber, rice and seaweed. Plus, the platters are made fresh and delivered straight to your door.
WHEN A DONUT AND SUSHI MEET
It’s more than delicious flavours for Maruwaan. You can expect to find everything from the humble crowd-favourite salmon roses to the weird and wonderful sushi donut. For those who have never seen one before, it’s freshly cut salmon, prawn and avocado with a sprinkling of sesame seeds and a drizzle of chilli Japanese mayo wrapped around a donut-shaped ring of fluffy sushi rice. Heaven.
